Frequently Asked Questions

How many credits can Tech Prep award me?
There is no “official” limit of credits that a student can earn in Tech Prep – the number is usually determined by the college and the consortium.

What if I decide to attend a college other than XXX – will college credit earned through Tech Prep transfer?
College credits are college credits, and they can transfer from one institute to another. But, like any program and any college, there is not a guarantee.  Students who transfer from one college to another or to a university should contact the next institution, and find out what their procedures are for transferring credit.  At many schools, a student meets with a dean or department official who reviews their transcript and can inform him or her of her credit transfer options.

Why should I take Tech Prep classes if I know I am going to a 4 year college/university?
In every career cluster, there are many related occupations that require different levels of training, experience, and degrees or certificates.  In the world of work, a person may start in one position, and as they progress in their career, they may transfer their skills to other jobs within the same industry.  If a student can acquire a broad set of skills in a career cluster, they will have the ability to be mobile in their careers, if they so choose.  Also, Tech Prep credits are college credits, and if a person plans to go to a university, they can begin working towards that ultimate goal through a community and technical college.

How soon after finishing a Tech Prep class will I receive credit?
There is a difference between “receiving” or being awarded credit, and having that credit transcribed. Credit is awarded when a person successfully completes the Tech Prep course. Depending on the size and structure of the consortium, credit will be transcribed at different times during the year.  Typically, a bigger consortium generates a transcript in the summer.

Will college credits earned through Tech Prep impact my financial aid award?
Student financial aid guidelines are developed at the federal level and administered at the local college level. Financial aid policies exist in order to efficiently serve the greatest number of students and to move students through the education system in the least amount of time. In general, if college credits earned through the Tech Prep program apply toward the student’s college program of study, their financial aid eligibility may be affected. Check with your college financial aid officer for more information as policies differ from institution to institution.
